Team of the Week: Leicester captain Wes Morgan inspires victory, Chelsea destroy Aston Villa and Alex Iwobi stars alongside Alexis Sanchez

Benjamin Wills picks the top eleven performers in another exciting weekend that saw Leicester extend their lead over Spurs, as well a drama at the bottom of the table.

Goalkeeper: Ben Foster (West Bromwich Albion)

Jack Butland’s injury looks to have ruled the young keeper out of Euro 2016, but he may not be missed, as Ben Foster seems more than capable of filling the vacant spot.

West Brom came up against a Sunderland side scrapping for survival, and Foster kept out seven shots from the hosts, who could not find a way through no matter how hard they tried.

The best save of the lot was when he denied Jermain Defoe with his foot. Foster turned 33 the day of the match; that clean sheet will have been a nice birthday present.

Right-back: César Azpilicueta (Chelsea)

Chelsea’s 4-0 demolishing of Aston Villa at Saturday lunchtime only caused more misery for Aston Villa in a dour season for them and their fans.

César Azpilicueta was assured in defence, as Villa never really looked like scoring, and the Spanish right-back also set up Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s first Premier League goal.

Azpilicueta linked up well with Pedro and put in a pinpoint low cross to Loftus-Cheek, who swept in the opener for his landmark goal.

Centre-back: Jan Kirchhoff (Sunderland)

After a nightmare debut, Jan Kirchhoff is really starting to grow in a Sunderland shirt following his January move from Bayern Munich.

Sunderland’s new defender-cum-midfielder was assured in the 0-0 draw with West Brom as he snuffed out any attacks the Baggies made, and also threatened the opposition goal on occasion.

Kirchhoff had more touches, passes, and interceptions than anyone else on the pitch.

Centre-back: Wes Morgan (Leicester City)

Wes Morgan has been one of the key men for Leicester in their surprise assault on the Premier League title, and this weekend, he finally got the headlines he deserved.

Morgan nodded in the only goal of the game in Leicester’s win over Southampton – his first goal of the season.

As ever, Morgan was sound defensively as Leicester won 1-0 for the fifth time from their last six matches.

Left-back: Christian Fuchs (Leicester City)

Christian Fuchs has been one of the more understated members of the Leicester squad this season, if such a thing is possible, and he showed why again on Sunday.

Fuchs was and has been part of a defence that kept its fourth successive clean sheet, and he was key in their goal this weekend too.

The Austrian was the man who whipped in the cross that Morgan nodded in to give Leicester their latest priceless victory.

Right midfielder: Pedro (Chelsea)

Pedro’s Chelsea career thus far has been hit and miss, but his display at Villa Park was most certainly a hit.

The ex-Barcelona winger, who signed last summer for £21 million, made it 3-0 to the Blues one minute after the half-time break when he tucked in Oscar’s cutback to end the match as a contest.

His tally was doubled not long after when he seized on a poor bit of Brad Guzan goalkeeping to wrap up a really humiliating afternoon for Villa.

Centre midfielder: Jonny Howson (Norwich City)

Norwich’s 3-2 victory over Newcastle was arguably the most crucial of the weekend, and Jonny Howson was the man that pulled the strings for the Canaries.

Howson contributed assists to two of Norwich’s three goals in what was a cliché ‘six pointer’ at Carrow Road.

Both Mbokani and Olsson’s goals were set up by Howson, and Norwich are now four points clear of the relegation zone.

Centre midfielder: N’Golo Kanté (Leicester City)

It is said practically every week, but only because it is true – N’Golo Kanté has truly been the signing of the season.

Just days after making his international debut for France, Kanté was back at it again for Leicester, bossing the midfield as the Foxes’ fairytale continued.

Kanté made eight tackles – twice as many as anyone else on the pitch – and also made four interceptions, more than any other Leicester player.

Left midfielder: Alex Iwobi (Arsenal)

The end of Arsenal’s season has not been a happy one for their supporters, although Alex Iwobi’s emergence could be the shining light from a drab period.

Iwobi was the Man of the Match as Arsenal gunned down Watford 4-0 at the Emirates, scoring one goal and causing Watford problems all afternoon.

He played at youth international for England until under-18 level, but has now chosen to represent Nigeria – have the Three Lions let a gem of a talent slip through their fingers?

Striker: Alexis Sánchez (Arsenal)

Alexis Sánchez has not been at his brilliant best this season, though he was exceptional in Arsenal’s dismantling of Watford.

Sánchez bundled Arsenal in front after just four minutes when his initial header was saved, and he would later provide an assist.

The Chilean darted into the box and played it across goal for Iwobi to finish in a typical Arsenal move as their slim title hopes remained somewhat alive.

Striker: Aleksandar Mitrovic (Newcastle United)

Newcastle United came up short in their huge clash with Norwich, but if Aleksandar Mitrovic had started, they may well have won.

Mitrovic came on as a sub with just under half an hour to play and netted twice as Newcastle pushed Norwich right to the end.

The imposing Serbian striker headed past John Ruddy to drag the Magpies level at 1-1, and he also tucked home a penalty, but it was not enough for Rafa Benitez’s men.
