Premier League Week Two Predictions: Featuring The Offside Rule Social Media Team

By Mark Young. It is week two of the Premier League and this week Mark Young takes on the Offside Rule Pod Social Media team (Charlotte Duncker, Michael Henson and Niamh Archibald) as they go head to head to see who can predict the future, or get close to it in football terms. Aston Villa 0-2 Newcastle: The final ball cost Newcastle against Manchester City on Sunday but they can bounce back against a Villa side that tend to struggle at home in recent seasons. Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere look lively with Jack Colback a perfect destroyer in the middle of the park. Villa acquitted themselves well against a disjointed Stoke City team but could struggle this weekend where expectations are higher.

Charlotte predicts… Aston Villa 1-1 Newcastle: After Villa’s hard fought victory against Stoke they will be hoping to take another three points this weekend. But the Magpies created chances against the champions in their opening game and they have won more Premier League away games at Villa Park than anywhere else, so I predict both teams to cancel each other out with a score draw.

Chelsea 3-0 Leicester City: Leicester visit Stamford Bridge and could easily find themselves coming away empty-handed. Chelsea were magnificent against Burnley after going a goal down but it shouldn’t take that to wake them up on home turf. A simple win for the London side should be on the cards and maybe even a goal for a returning legend up front if he is given enough minutes for Mourinho to put yet more icing on their already wonderful cake.

Charlotte predicts… Chelsea 3-0 Leicester: The Premier League new boys played well against Everton and earned a well-deserved point but I think Stamford Bridge will be a task too far. Chelsea were impressive in their first game and I think Cesc Fabregras and Diego Costa will make a big impression at the Bridge. Chelsea will run out convincing winners.

Swansea City 2-1 Burnley: Burnley could not have wished for a better start against Chelsea on Monday night but the dream turned into a nightmare in the lead up to half-time when the Blues ran riot. They visit LVG’s party poopers in Swansea on Saturday and Gary Monk’s side will be in no mood to ease up. But, their second half against Chelsea showed the Clarets can be very stubborn. Saying that, Swansea should have made it two wins from two by five o’clock on Saturday evening.

Charlotte predicts… Swansea 2-0 Burnley: The Swans looked solid at Old Trafford and ran out deserved winners. With their homes fans behind them I can’t see anything other than a second win of the season.

Crystal Palace 1-1 West Ham: Plucky Palace came unstuck by Aaron Ramsey’s late winner on the opening weekend but will have to take some initiative against Big Sam’s battlers this weekend who themselves lost to a last-minute goal last Saturday. Both will be reeling from those results but, for me it could well be a point apiece and last spot on Match of the Day come Saturday night.

Charlotte predicts… Crystal Palace 1-2 West Ham: Palace will be looking to focus their efforts on three points after all the off-pitch exploits this week. However, the Hammers were unlucky to lose at home against Spurs and I can see them grabbing a winner.

Southampton 3-1 West Brom: Southampton are another team that lost thanks to a late lapse in concentration on the opening weekend. However, none will be more buoyed than the written-off, down and out Saints, who were magnificent and dominant in spells at Anfield. They play West Brom at St Mary’s this weekend who drew 2-2 with Sunderland at the Hawthorns last time out. The Saints should get off the mark in this one with one or two new signings getting on the score sheet in the process.

Charlotte predicts: Southampton 1-1 West Brom… Both sides showed promise in their opening games. The Baggies had a solid home performance against Sunderland and Southampton’s new players did well at Anfield. I predict both teams will be equally as strong and share the spoils as a result.

Everton 2-1 Arsenal: Arsenal won ugly at the weekend – something the Gunners don’t generally tend to do. Could they be turning over a new leaf or are they likely to fall at the place of one of their most inept performances of last season? Romelu Lukaku had the time of his life against the Wenger’s side in April as he scored in a 3-0 victory that summed up Arsenal’s performances against some of the league’s better teams. They meet early on this time around but the Gunners travel to Goodison after a midweek trip to Turkey, not as fun as it sounds and without key squad members yet to figure. Everton meanwhile, have had a week to think about drawing with Leicester and will have no choice but to fire themselves up as they look to attack the weaknesses of a potentially jaded Arsenal.

Charlotte predicts…Everton 2- 1 Arsenal: The Gunners managed to scrape past Palace and put in an uninspiring performance midweek in the Champions League. With Olivier Giroud poor current form and the extra game I predict Everton to narrowly scrape a victory on Saturday evening.

Hull City 1-1 Stoke City: A questionable early season fixture choice by Sky. Hull City, fresh from a trip to Belgium on Thursday to face Lokeren in the Europa League, take on Stoke City. It is a game that should certainly be for the purists and I can see Hull adding a point to their opening day win at QPR. Stoke were poor at home to Villa last weekend and will know that Hull have travelled to Belgium and back since both teams last played. Mark Hughes’ team will try and keep the ball and tire Hull out and would probably be happy to take a point to get them off the mark.

Michael predicts… Hull City 0-1 Stoke City: I can see it being a low-scoring affair, if they can capitalise on Hull’s fatigue after their Europa League tie on Thursday, they’ll take all three points.

Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 QPR… Harry Redknapp returns to White Hart Lane with his newly promoted QPR squad but could be leaving with bad memories of a place where so many good ones were formed. Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs played in Europe on Thursday night but have the squad to cope. Erik Lamela is yet to show us what he can do and after a morale-boosting 93rd minute winner from Eric Dier last weekend, Spurs will feel they are on a role. There are plenty of Tottenham players with lots to prove and they have the perfect opponents to do it against on Sunday afternoon. I predict an easy Tottenham win.

Michael predicts… Tottenham 3-1 QPR: Nothing like an early London derby in the Premier League! Harry will be wanting to get a win over his former club but I think that Spurs’ firepower will be too much for QPR.

Sunderland 0-2 Manchester United: A new era started at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime but it felt just the same as the last one ended. Never the less, Louis van Gaal would have had his United squad on the training ground all week long,   and it’s likely the 3-5-2 system will have been tweaked to gain a good result at the Stadium of Light.

David Moyes won here last season as Adnan Januzaj came to prominence. A win doesn’t promise a fruitful season but it will be a start for LVG, who needs not only signings, but also results, before the pack above run away. Sunderland played well at the Hawthorns and showed terrific character to come back from 2-1 down to draw. The Black Cats will fancy their chances after knocking United out of the Capital One Cup last term but United should win.. famous last words.

Niamh predicts… Sunderland 1-1 Manchester United: In past years this fixture has provided the Premier League with some thrills aplenty. United will be hoping to get off the mark after their opening day defeat. Wayne Rooney will provide the biggest scoring threat for them if given decent supply, but Poyet’s side are well organised at the back and will cause United problems on the counter with their pace out wide.

Manchester City 3-1 Liverpool: Manchester City looked as though they were ready to drop points at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon but showed the composure of champions to dispose of a troublesome Newcastle side 2-0. Their strength in depth was proven with first goal maker Dzeko being replaced by second goal scorer Sergio Aguero. Liverpool had already snatched victory from Southampton as they got off to a winning start without Luis Suarez. The Achilles heel of last term almost reared its ugly head for Liverpool; a Mignolet finger tip was to thank for a victory that was not entirely convincing. The defensive frailty may once again prove to be the Reds’ downfall at the Etihad, where City have been close to perfect in the last 12 months. This could be an early season blow for Liverpool but early enough for the Merseysiders to go again.

Niamh predicts… Manchester City 2-1 Liverpool: The champions looked good in their opening day victory. The midfield trio of Yaya Toure, Fernando and Fernandinho all looked sharp giving David Silva the chance to push forward and support Sergio Aguero. Jordan Henderson has a good eye for a pass and if Liverpool are able to get Raheem Sterling and Daniel Strurridge running at and behind the City defence, they will cause problems. The fire power of Aguero, though, should see City take all three points.
