Premier League Predictions: Chelsea will be champions, United bounce back and Leicester to ruffle more feathers against Magpies
By Mark Young.
The relegation battle is still to be settled as Leicester look to drag opponents Newcastle into the mix in Saturday’s early kick-off and Manchester United welcome West Brom. On Sunday, City travel to White Hart Lane and Chelsea will be crowned champions with victory over Palace on Sunday, while Hull face Arsenal on Monday night.
Leicester City 3-1 Newcastle
Fresh from a 3-1 defeat by champions-elect Chelsea on Wednesday, Nigel Pearson’s men host troubled Newcastle, who have lost seven games in a row.
The one positive for Magpies in their most recent defeat to Swansea is that forward Siem de Jong returned from a long injury lay-off with a goal for John Carver’s struggling side.
Resurgent Leicester had recorded four victories in four games until succumbing to Jose Mourinho’s team and I reckon they will return to winning ways with a convincing performance.
Manchester United 2-0 West Brom
Last weekend’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Everton must have embarrassed Louis van Gaal and he will demand his team bounce back against West Brom.
Tony Pulis ensured safety with a hard-earned point from Liverpool last weekend. They could face a Red Devils team without both Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick, although after two goals for the Under-21’s team in midweek, Robin van Persie is waiting in the wings.
Baggies hero Saido Berahino burst onto the scene with a winning goal at Old Trafford last season but I don’t think he’ll be able to break through United’s defence this time.
Chelsea 3-0 Crystal Palace
Chelsea only need one win to lift the Premier League trophy after coming from behind impressively to beat Leicester on Wednesday.
The Eagles have been transformed by former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, who has turned the once toiling team around, despite a couple of recent slip-ups against Baggies and Hull.
Palace are capable of causing the Blues some problems but with the PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard in sparkling form, Chelsea will wrap things up with victory on Sunday.
Tottenham 2-1 Manchester City
Manchester City laboured to a 3-2 win over Aston Villa at the Etihad last week and could count themselves lucky to have not given away a penalty and had Joe Hart sent off late on.
They were troubled by Cristian Benteke and now face another top striker – PFA Young Player of the Year Harry Kane – who is desperate to help Mauricio Pochettino’s men secure Europa League football.
But Sergio Aguero has scored in his last three games and has an excellent record against Tottenham, and while he’ll grab another here, the hosts will dig out a narrow victory.
Hull City 1-1 Arsenal
The Tigers were down and out this time last week but after collecting six points in four days, they now sit four points clear of 18th-placed Sunderland with just four games to go.
But they know they are not safe with Burnley, Spurs and United still to play, and face a frustrated Arsenal side looking to recover from defeat to Chelsea last weekend.
Hull have shown their resistance this week and with a huge home support and momentum in their favour, a point is certainly not out of the question for them.
