Premier League Predictions: Hull beat United to put Newcastle down, while Leicester’s winning run continues against QPR
By Mark Young.
So here we are at the end of another season and there’s only one thing left to decide: the final team to be relegated. Hull are in the most danger as they face Manchester United and sit two points adrift of safety, but they have a better goal difference than struggling Newcastle, who welcome the Hammers. While champions Chelsea face newly-safe Sunderland, Stoke take on Liverpool and Leicester welcome QPR also on Sunday.
Newcastle 0-1 West Ham
John Carver’s side have been on a miserable run of form since the local man took charge and go into this match on the back of a 10-game winless run, which has them looking over their shoulders.
Sam Allardyce could potentially be on the touchline for the last time for the Hammers following their own poor run, despite displaying so much early-season promise.
It could be a nervy afternoon in the North East with the Magpies really needing a favour from Manchester United on Humberside, and I predict that Newcastle’s worst nightmare will come true against West Ham on Sunday.
Hull City 2-1 Manchester United
Hull need to win — and for Newcastle not to — to confirm a miracle survival. It could have all been so much easier for the Tigers if they had beaten Burnley or Spurs in their last two games.
United can’t finish any higher or lower than fourth place this term and although that is nothing to celebrate for a club of their size, Louis van Gaal had time to let his hair down at the Player of the Year awards this week.
The hosts may be able to find a few chinks in the Red Devils’ armour and with fitness doubts over sought-after keeper David De Gea, Sunday could be a day of surprises. Steve Bruce has never beaten United in the league as a manager — now would be a good time to start.
Chelsea 2-0 Sunderland
Sunderland travel to Stamford Bridge in buoyant mood after securing their place in the Premier League with a draw at Arsenal in their game in hand on Wednesday night. Dick Advocaat has done exactly what is expected of him but his future is still to be decided.
Ten-man Chelsea were beaten 3-0 by West Brom at the Hawthorns two days earlier, in a defeat that will not have made Jose Mourinho happy, so he will expect a renewed intensity about his side this weekend.
With nothing on the line and the trophy set to be lifted, it should be a walk in the park for the Blues as the Black Cats will be relieved to not be playing for anything.
Stoke City 2-0 Liverpool
Liverpool travel to ninth-placed Stoke, who, after earning a hard-fought point against Burnley last week, secured their most successful season in the Premier League.
Steven Gerrard’s farewell at Anfield was spoiled as they came up against Alan Pardew’s party poopers. Although the Reds did go a goal up against Crystal Palace, they were completely outplayed and eventually lost 3-1.
Brendan Rodgers’ men will have to beware the threat of two former Liverpool stars, Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam, and since the big guns all seem to struggle at the Britannia, I see Stoke triumphing here.
Leicester City 3-0 QPR
Ten games ago, it would have been nonsense to suggest that Leicester would stay up but with six wins since then, the Foxes have managed it with a game to spare.
QPR ended their home season with a win over Newcastle — who could be the third team to join them in the Championship next season — but were sent down after a 6-0 thumping by Manchester City.
It’s been another grossly disappointing campaign for Rangers and I reckon they’ll be defeated again at Leicester as Nigel Pearson’s men finish the season on a high.
