24. Alexandra Popp

Alexandra Popp’s big year was cruelly interrupted as the clinical German striker picked up an injury which ruled her out of Euro 2017.

Germany could have done with her too, Popp had ended the domestic season with eight goals for Bundesliga champions for Wolfsburg, and the 26-year-old is already closing in on that target again this season with only half the campaign gone.

Whilst we’ll never know how Germany would have performed with Popp in the team in the Netherlands, she did release some end of season frustration for the national side.

Popp scored in a shock defeat at home to Iceland in a 2019 World Cup qualifier, before scoring twice in an 11-0 win against the Faroe Islands, before scoring a further two in a thumping 4-0 friendly defeat of France.

Pernille Harder, Wolfsburg team mate says:

“Popp is a winner, she will do anything to win. She goes into everything with 100% and her heading ability is just excellent!”

Stephan Lerch, Wolfsburg manager says:

“Alexandra is an absolute leader, a team player through and through. Poppi has an exceptionally good header and is a great goal scorer. Her good left foot and her strength in attack make her special, as well as her sturdy leadership.”
