60. Nina Burger
Playing for a mid-table side in SC Sand, Nina Burger’s scoring form has always been more than impressive. Seven goals last season leading into the European Championships has been followed by four already this campaign.
Burger led Austria to the Euro’s and was the main focal point in their attack as they stunned Europe by going all the way to the semi-finals, just a penalty shootout away from the final.
Burger scored the crucial winner against Switzerland in the opening group game before adding another in the final match against Iceland.
The striker stepped up to score her penalty in their quarter-final shootout win against Spain, but never got the chance against Denmark as her nation bowed out with pride.
Dominik Thalhammer, Austria national team head coach says:
“Her goals per game (52 in 96 games/as of Nov. 25, 2017) ratio stands out making her the number one goal scorer in Austrian international football, male or female. Nina’s skills feature great anticipation and positioning within the box, a great header game and the ability to protect the ball. Nina is one of the great athletes in the game as she has been working on her body ever since. She is born with all the instincts a successful scorer needs to be successful. Last but not least, she’s got outstanding character making her a great leader.”
Sophie Lawson, European women’s football writer says:
“One of the first names on the team sheet, Austria vice-captain Nina Burger played a pivotal role for her national team this summer, writing herself into the history books as the first ever Austrian woman to score at a major tournament – and only the third Austrian (male or female) to score at the Euro’s.
“History came thick and fast for Austria this summer, winning their first ever match at a Euro’s as well as their first ever knockout game, Burger an ever-present for Dominik Thalhammer’s impressive Austria. Domestically, Burger has continued her steady for for modest Bundesliga side SC Sand. A tireless worker in attack, the 29-year-old consistently offers her team an attacking out, even when they’re behind the ball.”
