41. Jill Scott
Jill Scott is one player who seems to have stepped up under Phil Neville’s Lionesses tenure. Always having the ability to stretch her legs in her box-to-box role for club and country, Scott showed herself to be one England’s most important players throughout the year. She performed well at the summer’s World Cup and popped up inside the box after just a few minutes to open the scoring in the quarter-final against Norway, England’s most convincing performance at the tournament. A VAR decision overshadowed what was a delightful flick around the corner to put Ellen White in on goal against the USA but a SheBelieves Cup, FA Cup and Continental Cup meant it was another really good year for a virtuoso midfielder.
Nick Cushing, Manchester City manager:
“Jill could play in any team. She’s so competitive and she has the physical ability to dominate a football game, whether it be on the floor, aerially or up against another player, she can really drive the game on. She’s a good midfield player with the ball, she’s incredible in receiving the ball to play forward and I think her desire, work rate and commitment is unrivalled in the women’s game. She’s been consistent for the last 10 years and I think you saw for England she played all the big games because she drove the games for England, I thought she was England’s best player at the World Cup.”
