England Women’s World Cup squad announced

After a lot of waiting and plenty of anticipation, England Women’s head coach Mark Sampson announced his 23-woman squad for the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada.

Under the eyes of dozens of media outlets from around the country and expectant fans at home, Sampson announced the players one-by-one at Canada House in London, but the players had already learned their fates before the weekend.

There were few surprises as the three goalkeepers arrived on stage, but there was no space for Liverpool captain Gemma Bonner and Manchester City’s Demi Stokes.

Anita Asante and Jess Clarke also missed out, and despite rumours of a late surge into the squad, Chelsea’s Gemma Davison also failed to make the cut.

Captain Steph Houghton will be relieved to have recovered from injury, as will Toni Duggan, Karen Carney, Jodie Taylor and several others.
