The Offside Rule (We Get It!) Podcast 17: Managerial Meltdowns, Euro 2017 Women’s Squad, Isn’t That Canny

Kait Borsay and Lynsey Hooper are back to present episode 17 of The Offside Rule (We Get It!). We give our thoughts on David Moyes’ now infamous “you might get a slap, even though you’re a woman” comment to reporter Vicki Sparks. Moyes is not the only manager to say or do something they regretted when under pressure. Which ex-Arsenal defender resigned after punching a fan? And which two managers overused the C bomb? The England Women’s squad for Euro 2017 has been announced, and there’s some players conspicuous by their absence. We look at new inclusions, big exclusions, and grab a chat with England stars Laura Bassett, Jodie Taylor and Izzy Christiansen. Finally, we’ve all seen the Cristiano Ronaldo statue, with some saying it looks more like Niall Quinn than the Portugese superstar – poor Niall. But is it the worst one we’ve seen? Is it even the worst Cristiano Ronaldo statue we’ve seen? Tune in to the podcast and our Twitter feed to find out.

Here’s some snippets from the Laura Bassett, Izzy Christiansen and Jodie Taylor interviews!

Laura Bassett

Focus on experience in squad and new faces

Never felt so prepared for a tournament – same for the whole squad.

19 players in squad previously went to World Cup, some 4th/5th/6th tournament, very experienced squad. You can’t beat that experience.

New squad members been performing so well. Add so much to the group, fit in straight away. Very mature, lots of experience. Amazing to think it’s their first tournament. They add so much value.

Been moved around room-sharing wise recently. Some players in stable room shares but some of us moved around. Happy with that! Currently with Alex Greenwood, she might be a keeper!

Jodie Taylor

Focus on the group

Great to be back. Excited to be part of the team.

In a really good place as a team. Gained a lot of experience as a team – 19 played in World Cup.

Pressure as one of the Euro favourites feeds into the team’s belief.

Since the World Cup we’ve had new players in, great people and players, and the group keeps going from strength to strength. Those additions are making us stronger.

Also been floating about room share-wise!

Izzy Christiansen

Focus on her first major tournament, MS announcing squad 3 months early, Scotland

So excited for first major tournament. All positive emotions running through me. Benchmark for the Scotland game, to get ready as a group of 23.

Came into the camp post-Canada, part of the post-mortem. Learnt a lot from that – almost felt like I was in Canada.
Squad announced on TV, wouldn’t have happened 10 years ago – learning from experienced players like Laura Bassett who’ve been around longer.
I wish the first game was tomorrow now that the squad has been announced! Togetherness of this team is unrivaled and it’ll only get stronger now we know who the 23 are.
Usually room with Nikita, Manchester City teammate.
