It looks like Alonso’s week has improved since his heavily criticised error during Chelsea’s draw against Manchester United last Saturday.
Chelsea’s left back hasn’t always been in the headlines for the right reasons, but Blues fans should be relieved that he has sealed a five-year extension to his contract. Not only does the regular Spanish squad player bring versatility, he definitely makes more of an impact in front of goal than Alvaro Morata does.
This week, new boss Maurizio Sarri expressed his happiness with the contract extension, telling reporters: “If he can improve he can be the best left back in Europe.” Sarri’s seal of approval should help improve Alonso’s defensive potential.
Glory came in Alonso’s first season with Chelsea after he made the move from Fiorentina to Stamford Bridge in 2016. But, Chelsea fans are still split on Alonso and many believe there are better left backs elsewhere.
The Spaniard is a wing back and attacker stuck in a defender’s position. He is a free-kick maestro who has contributed massively, having been involved in 21 Premier League goals for Chelsea since August 2016, according to Opta. He has bagged an impressive 14 goals and 7 assists for the Blues.
Now Alonso’s deal has been tied up, the club will turn their attention to continuing contract talks with Eden Hazard, the flawless core of the team and September’s player of the month.
On Thursday night, Chelsea continued their good form beating Belarusian side BATE Burisov 3-1 in the Europa League.
