Weekend Wanderings: FA Cup action and derby day drama

After a week where European Cup headlines dominated the football news. it’s the return of domestic action. Here are the games you should be keeping an eye on this weekend.

1) Can Wolves halt Manchester United’s cup run?

After knocking out Arsenal in the previous round of the FA Cup, Manchester United ended up drawing another difficult tie – an away trip to face Wolves.

Nuno’s Wolves side remain an impressive outfit and have a habit of giving the so-called ‘Big Six’ teams a headache – just ask Chelsea.

Now that Manchester United have suffered their first loss under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has the air of invincibility also been lost? Either way this is sure to be a well-matched tie at Molineux.

2) Will Millwall add another Premier League scalp?

Championship Millwall are still standing in the FA Cup and if they are to go another step further they will have to take down another team from the top tier – Brighton.

Neil Harris’ team may still be battling relegation in the league, but the cup has been a welcome piece of joy for supporters.

Millwall most recently knocked out AFC Wimbledon and Everton in the cup and their home stadium has a certain aura that could intimidate Chris Hughton’s players.

After all Brighton aren’t exactly used to getting this far in cup competitions.

3) Can Liverpool put pressure on Manchester City by taking top spot again?

With Manchester City in FA Cup action the time has come for Liverpool to re-take top spot as they take on Fulham in the league on Sunday.

Manchester City are currently a point above the Reds but following the incredible result against Bayern in midweek the mood on Merseyside is back to its buoyant best.

A victory against Fulham will pile pressure on Pep Guardiola’s team, but if Liverpool fail to take full advantage then suddenly City look more and more like favourites.

This is no time for slip-ups.

4) Who comes out on top in this top-of-the-table derby?

Everyone loves a Yorkshire derby, but when it has such implications for the top of the table it adds an extra edge.

Leeds United, currently second in the Championship on 73 points, take on third-place Sheffield United.

You don’t have to be an expert to understand how important a win would be here for either side’s automatic promotion hopes.

Should Leeds win then they’ll build a four-point gap ahead of Sheffield United and the promotion place becomes theirs to lose.

With two teams that play such quality football this game is certain to be a must watch.

5) Can AC Milan’s winning form continue in the derby?

Speaking of derbies, this weekend sees one of the most iconic – the Milan derby.

AC Milan and Inter have long been two of the standout clubs in Italy and their rivalry needs no introduction, but there are also vital points at stake.

Milan, in third, are just a point ahead of fourth-placed Inter with both desperate to keep hold of the Champions League spaces they currently occupy.

Gennaro Gattusso’s side go into the derby in fine form having won the last five league games. Milan’s run has been led by striker Krzysztof Piatek who has six goals in seven Serie A outings.

Inter meanwhile are the team who have found it tougher of late, but a win for either side will give them vital confidence as the season enters its closing stages.
