37. Danielle Van De Donk
Danielle van de Donk was another player who proved to form a crucial part of the Netherlands side that won Euro 2017 in the summer.
Van de Donk had at times struggled to impose herself on an Arsenal side filled with creative attacking players, but Van de Donk was a regular starter in the attacking midfield role for the Dutch.
It took her a while to get in the goals, but when she did it couldn’t have been more important. With Sarina Weigman’s side leading England 1-0 in the semi-final, Van de Donk pounced on a loose header from then Arsenal team mate Fara Williams to all but confirm the Netherlands’ place in the final.
Van de Donk played a key role against Denmark on the biggest stage of all and joined an illustrious club of players who can say they’re European champions.
Renee Slegers, Netherlands international team mate says:
“We have been playing together ever since we were teenagers. She played as a right back for Willem II and that is when I noticed her potential for the first time. So eager, so much energy, she can win balls but she is also good in one on one situations. She developed a lot and she is now the smart player that is good at keeping the ball and making breakthrough passes.”
Loes Geurts, former Netherlands international team mate says:
“Danielle is, and has always been, the fighting machine in the midfield with a very good view on the game. She will never stop and never give up defensively and has an excellent final pass to the strikers.”
