39. Nilla Fischer

Whilst it was always going to be difficult to live up to a year which saw her win an Olympic silver and named in the FIFPro Best XI, 2017 was another solid twelve months for a superb experienced defender.

Fischer was more a key part of a Wolfsburg side that again came on top in Germany, winning the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal at the end of the 16-17 campaign.

Fischer and her team mates are leading the way again this season, but Fischer will be disappointed that yet another major tournament ended earlier than she’d planned after Sweden lost to the Netherlands at Euro 2017.

However, Fischer’s life and career is about to take on new meaning as she will become a mother for the first time in the next few weeks.

Stephan Lerch, Wolfsburg manager says:

“Our captain has a wide range of qualities. She is a leading player, good on the ball and has an exemplary attitude. Add to that her tackling strength on the defensive and her good positional play and we have a great player.”
